THING 12 - Data Tools Powerpoint(s)

Part 3 - Data Warehousing

Data Warehouses are for the storage and retrieval of student information. Everything from student achievement to demographics, to attendance and discipline may be stored. Data may be used by teachers to set goals for their students, and to inform instruction. Reports may also be created by the use of this data. FERPA/HIPPA laws are important because they protect the privacy of our students. It is important whenever student information is being posted, such as their grades, that a random code is assigned to each student so that their grade is listed by their assigned number, versus their name or social security number.

THING 12 - Assessment/Evaluation and Survey Tools

Part 2 - I created a rubric using Rubistar. This is a rubric for skill testing students performing the serve in badminton. It will help me assess whether students are using proper form and technique. It will also help me see how proficient their aim and accuracy is on their serve. A good serve is important when playing badminton. It is one skill that some students have trouble with. If they can improve their serve, they will have more fun playing the game. This rubric will help me to see what areas they may need to work on in order to improve their serve.

THING 12 - Assessment/Evaluation and Survey Tools

Part 1 - I created an Exercise Interest Survey using Google Forms. I think this would be fun to use in my classes. My students could see how much their peers exercise, how often they exercise, what their favorite exercises are, and so on. It may even motivate a few students when they see what others are doing.

THING 6 - DIFFERENTIATION

Part 4 - Text-to-Audio Conversion

I used vozMe to make a text to audio recording. I thought it would capture the student's attention to do something similar to "What's My Line?, but all physical activity and sport related. I can play the audio and have the students guess who it is by the description. This one says, "I was the first person to run the mile in under four minutes. Who am I?" Do you know?

THING 6 - DIFFERENTIATION

Part 3 - Universal Design for Learning

I chose to visit the site called Universal Design for Learning: Strategies, Tools, and Resources. The video was very informative and reinforced the three main points for designing learning experiences to make sure everyone is a successful learner. The main theme is to provide multiple means of presentation, action & expression, and engagement. Being flexible and allowing choices gives learners more than one pathway to learning the content of my lessons. Again, it is difficult to find resources that are applicable specifically to physical education. However, I did explore Wordle and made a few word clouds using terms from both our badminton and personal conditioning units. This is a neat way to display the vocabulary used in these units. The most often used words are bolder and larger, therefore, they really pop out at you. This is a good visual reminder of some of the main terms used in those units.

THING 6 - DIFFERENTIATION

Part 2 - Diverse Learning

It is always a challenge to adapt certain things, (whether they are resources, new ideas, etc.), to make them pertain to physical education. This is one of those cases where most of these techniques to support diverse learners are for the "paper and pencil" or "sit down" type of classes, not an activity class like physical education. We do not use a text book for physical education, nor do we do a lot of reading and writing. Our main goal is for our students to be physically active during our class. With that being said, the one area that I think could apply the most would be "Visual". I was able to find some good illustrations on Google Images of various yoga poses that would be helpful when teaching them to our students. Having a picture is useful so students can see the proper form. It is helpful to have visual reminders to reinforce how they should be doing the different poses. I can print them off and put them on a poster on the wall.

THING 6 - DIFFERENTIATION

Part 1 - The following are things I already do in my teaching which meet the elements of differentiated instruction:
  • Use flexible grouping of students and frequent regrouping
  • Use of discussion which engages all learners, use of demonstrations, and having information written out on the white board. Also, the use of posters and pictures to show proper form for some skills.
  • Students are actively engaged and challenged. They set individual goals for improvement on things like the Pacer fitness test.
  • Reinforce key concepts
  • Vary tasks instead of giving my students a single drill to work on.
  • Give students choices in equipment and space. For example, students may choose a shorter badminton racket with an oversized head to help them with hand/eye coordination. Students may move up closer when serving in volleyball or shooting in basketball, to help them learn the skill and be more successful at the same time.

THING 5 - Thinkfinity

The first activity from Thinkfinity that I can use in my 7th grade PE class is the Wonder of the Day: Why Are There Dimples On a Golf Ball? This would be a fun and interesting fact to share during our golf unit. I have found that middle school students really like to hear new and unusual things. I think this would be a very good and informative piece to use.

Penicillin, Coca-Cola, Popsicles, rubber and golf ball dimples all have one thing in common — they were accidental discoveries. Check out today’s...

The second activity that I can use in my 8th grade classes is Wonder of the Day: Does Love Conquer All in Tennis? How to keep score in tennis is always the most difficult scoring system to teach. This piece goes into great detail about the origins of scoring in tennis and gives an excellent analogy of the use of a clock. It is very informative and interesting. I think my students could learn a lot from this Wonder of the Day.
